MWC '08: Google's Android OS / UI makes a stealth appearance (under the watchful eye of TI)
Tuesday, 19 February, 2008
On passing the Texas Instruments stand on
my last MWC day attendance, my friend (from Hong
Kong phone site, PhoneDaily) and I noticed a
brief-yet-concisive demonstration of the
'Android', Google's smartphone-to-be operating
system / user interface. Of course, I'm pretty
sure the repeated act was to show off just how
capable the company's hardware were in running
the OS - but, in the case here, that wasn't
really the point.
We managed to take more than just a gander at the device, and managed to experience just what Google has in store for us. Considering that it was a very early prototype handset, yet I can just see the Android UI running on one of these form factors, the OS ran quite smoothly and without any major glitches or issues (well, apart from the fact that it seems to be using a Windows Vista based theme - from the colours and wallpaper, and right down to the system font / typeface!)
During the hands-on, we managed to get some live shots - as well as a short video (see below) - of the handset in action. Take a look and see for yourself as to what the other players in the market will have to be wary about once Android goes gold.
